Abstract

Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are widely used across many communities as a
convenient solution for treating common health problems. These medicines allow individuals
to manage minor symptoms such as headaches, fever, allergies, cough, cold, acidity, and
mild body pain without requiring a doctor’s prescription. Because they are easily available in
pharmacies, supermarkets, and online platforms, many people rely on them as their first
response when experiencing everyday health discomforts. The ability to obtain medicines
quickly and without formal medical consultation has contributed to the growing popularity
of OTC medication use.
Despite the benefits associated with accessibility and convenience, the widespread use of
OTC medicines also raises important concerns regarding safe usage. These medicines still
contain active chemical substances that can affect the body, and incorrect use may lead to
unwanted health consequences. Taking medicines in higher doses than recommended,
ignoring dosage instructions, combining multiple medicines without understanding their
interactions, or relying on inaccurate sources of information may increase the risk of misuse.
In many situations, individuals make medication decisions based on personal experience,
advice from friends or family, or information obtained from online sources rather than
professional medical guidance.
The present study investigates the level of knowledge, awareness, and behavioral patterns
related to OTC medication use among respondents. The research adopts a quantitative
cross-sectional approach and collects data through a structured questionnaire. The
respondents mainly consist of students and young adults who frequently rely on OTC
medicines to manage minor health conditions.
The findings of the study reveal that although OTC medicines are widely used, there are
several gaps in awareness related to correct dosage, label-reading habits, and
understanding of possible drug interactions. Some respondents reported experiencing mild
side effects such as dizziness, stomach discomfort, or allergic reactions after using OTC
medicines. The study also shows that while many participants recognize general risks
associated with misuse, such awareness does not always translate into responsible
medication behavior.
Overall, the results highlight the importance of strengthening public awareness regarding
safe OTC medication practices. Encouraging individuals to read medicine labels carefully,
seek guidance from pharmacists when necessary, and rely on reliable sources of information
can contribute to safer self-medication practices and reduce potential health risks.
