Abstract
The study adopts a community-based approach to understand the lived realities of women and girls during menstruation. Field observations, informal interactions, and discussions with community members reveal that several systemic barriers continue to hinder safe and dignified menstrual practices. These include a lack of clean and private toilets, insufficient water supply for washing and sanitation, scarcity of affordable sanitary products, and widespread reliance on unhygienic alternatives such as reused cloth. The findings from Girdharpur underscore the urgent need for comprehensive interventions such as menstrual education programs, improved access to low-cost sanitary products, installation of gender-sensitive sanitation facilities, and active community engagement to dismantle harmful taboos. Overall, this study highlights that improving menstrual hygiene and sanitation in rural communities requires more than infrastructural development; it demands a holistic approach that addresses knowledge gaps, socio-cultural attitudes, gender norms, and systemic inequalities.
