Exploring Grassroot Realties: Insights From Student Led Community Research

Abstract

This Community Connect research project investigated the awareness, accessibility, and user experience of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) among households residing around Sharda University, Greater Noida. The study operated with the understanding that clean cooking fuel played a crucial role in reducing indoor air pollution, improving women’s health, and minimizing drudgery associated with traditional biomass-based cooking. Although PMUY aimed to universalize LPG access by subsidizing initial connection costs for women from economically weaker sections, actual adoption and sustained usage depended on multiple social, economic, and informational factors.
A community-based descriptive survey was conducted with 41 respondents, selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire comprising both close-ended and open-ended items. The survey focused on awareness sources, application experiences, duration of LPG usage, previous cooking fuels, perceived health effects, time efficiency, satisfaction levels, affordability of refills, coping mechanisms during financial strain, and expectations for improvement. The analysis combined quantitative representation with qualitative interpretation, allowing a comprehensive understanding of lived experiences.
Findings indicated that awareness reached the community through diverse channels, with television and interpersonal networks emerging as the most influential sources. More than one-third of respondents reported facing difficulty during the application stage, suggesting that procedural barriers persisted despite policy provisions. While many users acknowledged time savings and moderate health improvement, refill affordability emerged as a significant constraint, often forcing families to delay refills or revert to traditional fuels. Nearly half of the participants suggested reducing refill costs as the most desired improvement.
The study highlights the PMUY meaningfully expanded access to LPG, yet sustained usage depended on economic capacity, behavioral adjustment, and supply consistency. The research contributed micro-level evidence to the broader national discourse on clean cooking transitions, demonstrating the need to balance distribution achievements with long-term affordability and awareness support.
