With about 3 million members spread between state police forces and national
paramilitary units, India's police force is among the biggest in the world. For
decades, it has been a part of UN peacekeeping deployments on every continent. In
2007, it made history in Liberia by deploying the first UN all-female Formed Police
Unit, a mission that was officially recognised by the UN. A small number of
candidates from India have achieved great success in the field of law enforcement,
including Kiran Bedi, a UN Civilian Police Adviser, and Gautam Sawang, a UN Police
Commissioner in Liberia. However, structurally, there is a contradiction.
